Every Dollar Counts: Funding Critical Repairs & Maintenance for the Avery Train Depot
The historic Avery Train Depot is a cherished landmark that needs your support to preserve its legacy. While we have made progress by remodeling the library, repairing the foundation, remodeling the women's bathroom, security system installation, internet installation, and updating the electrical system, many critical repairs are still needed to keep the depot in good condition. These include a new roof, updated men's bathroom and plumbing, new floor in the baggage room, and repairs to the train car on-site, as well as a sprinkler system for the park outside the depot to help maintain the surrounding landscape. Your donation will help ensure that this piece of history remains standing for future generations to appreciate. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in preserving the Avery Train Depot!
Foundation Repairs
The foundation of the Avery Train Depot underwent extensive repairs to ensure the building's stability and longevity. Rotten floor joists were replaced, along with structural support beams that had deteriorated over time. Many of the original concrete foundation footings were either missing or insufficient to support the structure, so new concrete footings were added where needed. Additionally, sections of the exterior bead board were rotten and replaced, with more still needing attention. These critical repairs came at a cost of $47,000, reinforcing the depot’s foundation and securing its future for years to come.
Library Remodel
Before |
After |
The library inside the Avery Train Depot underwent a four-month remodel to restore it to "period correctness" while integrating the modern functionality of a library. Located in the former telegraph and dispatch office for the railroad, the space was completely redesigned to reflect its historical significance. Thanks to the generous contributions of financiers, as well as the time and materials donated by volunteers, this $20,000 remodel was made possible. The result is a beautiful blend of history and modern amenities, ensuring the library serves the community for years to come.
Women's Bathroom
During recent renovations at the Avery Train Depot, we discovered that the foundation beneath the women's bathroom was severely rotted, compromising the structural integrity of the space. In addition to replacing the damaged foundation, we had to remove and upgrade the outdated plumbing to ensure long-term reliability. To correct the uneven surface left behind, a floor leveler was applied before installing new fixtures. Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to fix this area of the depot.
Electrical Wiring Replacement
As part of our ongoing restoration efforts, we replaced sections of old and unsafe electrical wiring throughout the Avery Train Depot. A significant portion of this work took place in the attic, where aging wires posed potential fire hazards and were no longer up to code. Your support helped us make these critical upgrades, improving both the safety and functionality of the building for future use.
Fish Pond
The historic fish pond at the Avery Train Depot has been fully repaired, painted, and beautifully remodeled. Cracks and leaks were sealed to restore its structure, and a fresh coat of paint brought new life to its appearance. With thoughtful updates and care, the pond is once again a charming and tranquil feature of the depot grounds—thanks to the continued support of our generous donors.
Entrance Ramp
A brand-new entry ramp has been constructed at the Avery Train Depot, creating an accessible and welcoming entrance for all visitors, including those using wheelchairs. Designed with both function and charm in mind, the new ramp not only meets modern accessibility standards but also enhances the overall appearance of the depot’s entryway. This important improvement was made possible through the kindness and generosity of our supporters.
